The digital formats that I convert photos to are shown below:
The Standard format - JPEG
Also referred to as JPG. JPEG is probably the most popular and compatible image format around. JPEG is the standard file format of most of today's consumer quality digital cameras and is supported by almost all of today's imaging software. JPEG uses lossy compression, meaning that some image data is lost when the file is compressed. The amount of compression can be varied, the more compression the more data is discarded and the smaller a file becomes. JPEG is great for creating smaller file sizes for uploading on the Internet, or for use with e-mail. It's also a good choice because it's very popular and likely to be around for a long time. I use the 'Highest' quality JPEG compression settings that provide you with high quality images.
The Option format - TIFF
TIFF format is the standard for most commercial and professional printing needs. The TIFF format is uncompressed, meaning that no image data is lost after scanning. TIFF is a great choice for archiving images when all detail must be preserved and file size is not a consideration. TIFF files are very large in size compared to JPEGs because no compression is used.
All photographs that I convert will be converted to the JPEG format for standard use and a TIFF image for 'archival use' can be provided for an extra charge.

"A picture is worth a thousand words" or simply put, a picture tells a story just as well as a large amount of narrative text. I started converting family photos over 15 years ago and during that time I found different way to use and share the photos. But I found combining photo images with the old art form, quilts creates a strong emotional response people see it. As a wall hanging, it become a unique and personal piece of art and become an heirloom as it passes from generation to generation.

Other Reasons to Convert Old Photos
- Paper photos and transparencies (slides and negatives) deteriorate over time. They will fade, get damaged - scratched, torn, bent. They may get moldy & stained depending on how they are stored, and they can get lost or destroyed by children and pets. Physical photos may also get ruined by water or floods and photos lost in a fire or in a natural disaster.
- With faded or color shifted photos, depending on how much fading or color shifting has occurred, the photo can be scanned and then digitally adjusted using a variety of photo editing software.
- With digital photos, you can share your memories with your children and extended family for generations to come with multiples copies. Digital images will not degrade like 'traditional' media and in a digital format they can be copied and reproduced into various formats and saved to different media such as CD or DVD, portable hard drives, flash drives, memory cards and servers. Or, email your photos, upload them to the web, share them with friends and family.
